Game Release

This doc goes into various factors when looking at the release of your game...

This category covers some of the things you'll need to consider to release your game such as the graphics you'll need for your Steam page or Meta Store page and other things of note.

Marketing

If you are starting out with very little outreach previously, it may be difficult to get the word out there. You will need to continue releasing marketing material for some time on as many platforms that your potential customers are in order to get your game seen. If one of your releases goes viral, thats fantastic! But if not, it is more a case of releasing assets over a long period of time.

Once released, continued marketing will play a key role in keeping your game in front of potential players as well, so don't forget to keep marketing your game after release.

Another approach is trying to get your game to Streamers, Youtubers, or Influencers. Send a copy of your game to those that like similar games or people who are willing to help start up developers. This will get your game infront of more people, depending on how many followers they have (and how viral your game might be).

As you develop your game, start compiling a press kit that has all the text, images, links, and assets you'd like to have displayed so it is as easy as possible to share your game and artwork to others.

Trust

Trust is an important factor when starting up. If you fail to deliver on your promises on the first game, it will be much harder to sell a second. Once you’ve ‘made it’ you may have more room to fail (e.g. Cyberpunk 2077).

A good rule of thumb is to underpromise and overdeliver, especially on your first game. The extra work will allow you some breathing space moving forward...hopefully!

Setting Expectations

Make sure that you set expectations correctly with your trailer, text and artwork so that when players do play your game, their expectations are met or exceeded. If your game does not meet expectations they might be less likely to purchase your next game.
